Some cool “Party” history.

July 29th, 2006

Stumbled across a link to a PBS “American Experience” show I saw six or eight months back on Tupperware. The show covered the Tupperware history. I found it interesting how many of the leading “Party Sales” companies have the same roots. Brownie Wise of Tupperware started as a Rep for “Stanley Home Parties” the original home party company.

Here is a quote from the PBS website: Alan Luce, Tupperware’s longtime in-house legal counsel, likened the history of the business to the “begats” of the Bible’s Old Testament. One can trace the lineage of any of today’s home party selling companies back to the original home party businesses. Stanley Home Parties, the most influential party plan company of the first half of the twentieth century, trained Brownie Wise, Mary Kay Ash of Mary Kay Cosmetics, and Mary Crowley, the founder of Home Interiors, among others. And Tupperware, in turn, launched a number of people who went on to build companies like Longaberger Party Baskets and Partylite. “Each company,” Luce said, “has spawned sales leaders who then in turn go out and start new direct selling companies using the party plan method of selling.”

Here is a link to story at PBS http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/tupperware/peopleevents/e_direct.html

If you get a chance to see the show on PBS I highly recommend it.

MBA’s Shiny New Blog

July 28th, 2006

Welcome to MBA’s shiny new Blog. I thought a blog would be a nice way to cover ideas and topics that can’t be covered well in Forums. I hope to add comments as well so others can add to the discussion.

If you are reading this then you have seen the new Website layout. It took a little longer that I wanted but I am pleased with the new layout and brighter colors. Hope to add RSS feeds as well.

Along with the new Blog is a whole new set of Forums. The SMF Forums are much nicer looking and I hope to avoid the problems of some Reps not being able to see all the options because of poor contrast with the colors (old Forum had Dark blue numbers on a Light blue background on bottom line).

In addition to MBA for Avon I am getting ready a new version of MBA for Watkins Reps. I have been working on this since last year but other things kept getting priority. If you know any Watkins Reps have them stop by. There should be a Beta version they can download and play with early in August. I have learned a lot in creating the Avon version and have designed the Watkins version a little differently (who says and old dog can’t lear new tricks). It’s been a two way street with the ideas. The idea for the Payment button on the Customer record in MBA for Avon came from the Watkins version. The next Avon version is also having a Payments list added to the Customer record as well and again this came from the Watkins version.

I don’t think there will be a blog post everyday but check back from time to time I hope to post at least once or twice a week.
